Skateboarders could face curfew

Councillors want to stop skateboarding problems before they get any worse
Late night skateboarders on the streets of a town in Powys are annoying residents so much that councillors want to set up a bye law to stop them.

Youngsters could be banned from riding on their boards of the streets of Presteigne at night as a result of the noise they are making.

Members of the town council claim the situation is not yet serious, but they do not want to wait for it to become worse before they take action.

The council's clerk has written to Powys Council asking if a byelaw setting up a curfew can be introduced.

If enforced, the by-law would ban children from playing in the streets after a certain time at night.

Presteigne Mayor Peggy Fraser-Scott said youngsters were using skateboards and rollerblades along the town's streets, often after midnight.

"We've also had vandals smashing windows and people in the street shouting in the small hours of the morning," she said.

"We want to nip this behaviour in the bud and we have liaised with the police to try and stop the situation getting worse."

Town clerk Lorraine Duncan said she had written to Powys Council's legal department asking for a by-law to be put in place to stop the rowdy behaviour.
