Lillian Briwnant Jones

One of Wales' most respected accompanists entertained guests at her 100th birthday party.

In a long career Lillian Briwnant Jones of Machynlleth has been the accompanist to some of the Welsh nation's finest singers including National Eisteddfod winners Dai Jones, from Llanilar and Richard Rees, from Pennal.

She was also the accompanist of the Machynlleth choir that travelled on an overnight milk train to win the 1935 National Eisteddfod competition in Cardiff.

On Friday, Mrs Briwnant Jones rolled back the years to entertain guests with a medley including Men of Harlech and Calon Lan at a party at the retirment home she lives at.

Mrs Briwnant Jones still entertains fellow residents at Cartref Dyfi, Machynlleth every Wednesday, although she admits the quality of the singing is not the best she has heard.

Welsh tenor, and winner of the coveted Eisteddfod prize, the blue ribbon and well known Welsh television celebrity, Dai Jones paid tribute to Mrs Briwnant Jones.

Blue Ribbon

"It is a great honour for me to be asked to attend her birthday because she has always been a fantastic accompanist."

Double Blue Ribbon winner, Richard Rees agreed.

"The secret of a great accompanist is they can adjust to a singer's mistakes and Lillian has always been able to do that wonderfully," he said.

One of the highlights of Mrs Jones' career came in the mid-1930s when Machynlleth choir beat off the might of south Walian choirs to win one of the major choir competitions at that year's National Eisteddfod held in Cardiff.

"We travelled down by train to Cardiff in the morning before arriving there in the afternoon," said Mrs Jones.

"We only had time to compete and win the competition before catching the milk train back to Machynlleth the next morning."
