The Queen will join in the celebrations of a special day
The Queen Mother's 100th birthday has been marked in Wales with a 21-gun salute in Cardiff.

The band of the Royal Welsh Regiment (Volunteers) performed as part of the celebrations, which are taking place across the UK.

The 104th Regiment Royal Artillery fired its salute to mark the occasion in the city centre.

A 'people's salute' was then led by Councillor Russell Goodway at Cathays Park at midday, with members of the public urged to join in the celebrations.

Roads around the civic centre will be closed off for the celebrations.

The Royal Mint in Llantrisant has produced a special 5 coin to mark the occasion.

It is the first coin of its kind to be minted for a 100th birthday in the royal family.

The coin features a portrait of the Queen Mother and her signature with the dates 1900 and 2000.

Families in Llanmaes Street, Grangetown, will continue a long tradition of royal street parties with a special celebration.

Residents have raised money to buy memorabilia marking the Queen Mother's birthday.

Staunch royalist

The Clarence Hotel in Tenby was named after the Queen Mother's residence in 1938.

The owners and guests will be celebrating the Queen Mother's 100th birthday in a very special way.

They will dust-down bunting last used during the Coronation and cut a cake with 100 candles on it.

The 68 bedroom hotel was named by the current owner's grandmother, Mary Phillips, who was a staunch royalist.
