It was the day of the underdog at Chepstow |
A "big, clumsy horse" has made racing history by winning its race at odds of 200-1 at Chepstow Racecourse. Arctic Blue is thought to be the biggest outsider to win at a Welsh course.
It triumphed in the John Smith's Extra Smooth Support ABF Novices Hurdle, pushing the favourite Flying Enterprise into fourth place.
Tim Long, the clerk of the course, said it was the sort of result that many race goers will only ever see once.
Arctic Blue, trained by Pat Rodford, held off the challenge of Bonny Grey and The Grocers Curate to come home first.
Mr Rodford's assistant Adrian Ridout said Arctic Blue had been "working well" recently.
"He's a big, clumsy horse, but has always shown plenty at home," he said.
The UK's biggest outsider won at 250-1 won at Kelso Races in Scotland in 1990.
Mr Long said Wednesday's win was "a very very popular result with the bookmakers".
"It's is a very very rare occurrence - certainly a result the bookmakers would have really relished because they wouldn't have taken much money on it."
And Jenny Prest, from bookmakers William Hill said: "I think it shows that anything can happen in racing".
"I am sure that anyone who took a shine to the name and put a lucky bet on will be celebrating."
