Bindaree was stuck in a traffic jam in his horse box |
The horse defending his Welsh National title had to make the final leg of the journey to Chepstow Racecourse under his own steam due to heavy traffic. Bindaree was stuck in a horse box at a roundabout off the Severn Bridge as the countdown to the race began.
His trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies realised he would not make it in time, so a jockey rode him the final two miles to the track.
With Carl Llewellyn on board, the horse came fifth behind winner Silver Birch.
After Tuesday's race, Mr Twiston-Davies said: "When the box came off the motorway, it was obvious it would not be able to get to the course in time.
"Paul Flynn kindly agreed to ride the horse the remainder of the way.
"I was already there, but it took me four hours compared to the usual journey time of an hour and a quarter."
Mr Twiston-Davies said he was delighted with Bindaree's performance and added: "It was a terrific run and now it's all roads to Aintree for the National with one run before, probably at Haydock."
