Bindaree clung on to claim a thrilling Coral Welsh National ahead of favourite Sir Rembrandt at Chepstow. Welsh-born Carl Llewellyn urged on the 2002 Grand National winner, who won by half a length in heavy rain.
Sir Rembrandt made a mistake at the fifth fence from home which proved costly to his challenge but he battled on to claim second spot.
Willie Mullins' Hedgehunter, who had been much-fancied at 7-2, was 22 lengths back in third.
Bindaree had taken up the early lead in difficult conditions as the rain continued to soften up the ground.
At the halfway point all 14 horses were still running with Bindaree heading up the field, while Sir Rembrandt preferred to bide his time among the pack on the inside.
Six fences from home Anthony Thornton nudged Sir Rembrandt into second but a mistake at the next disrupted his momentum.
Kings Mistral, Akarus, Hedgehunter and Take The Stand were also in contention five from home.
But when leading pair Kings Mistral and Akarus fell independently at the fourth-last it was left to Sir Rembrandt and Bindaree to battle it out.
The 2-1 favourite tried to reel in Bindaree in the closing stages but the nine-year-old had enough stamina to stay on.
"I knew there wasn't a lot left in Sir Rembrandt and that Bindaree could gallop home," said Llewellyn.
"He was very good, he is in much better form this season."
Winning trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies now plans to give Bindaree, who is priced at 20-1, another tilt at winning the Aintree Grand National in April.
"He seems a different horse this season, like when he won the Grand National," said Twiston-Davies.
"If he is well, he'll go back to Aintree next April.
"But is is great to win this because Carl [Llewellyn] and I are both Welsh."
In fact, Llewellyn became the first Welsh-born jockey to win the race since Dick Francis was successful in partnership with Crudwell back in 1956.
Bindaree was able to turn the tables on Sir Rembrandt after being beaten by eight lengths in the Rehearsal Chase on the same course three weeks earlier.
His owner Raymond Mould revealed that the revised weights had worked in Bindaree's favour.
"He ran a very good race in the Rehearsal and we had an 8lb pull here and it just proved enough," said Mould.
"He had his back treated in the summer and it seems to have given him a new lease of life."
