The curfew is planned for Holyhead's Market Square |
People in Holyhead on Anglesey are welcoming the news that North Wales Police are to introduce their first overnight curfew zone there. New powers will be used to curb anti-social behaviour by imposing a curfew at a trouble spot in the town.
Officers will be able to disperse groups of people who gather in the centre of Holyhead at night.
Police said they have had numerous complaints about disturbances in the area and councillors are welcoming the move.
Anglesey Councillor John Chorlton said Holyhead had had many problems in the area being targeted, and they wanted them sorted out.
"We've had many problems in the immediate area to do with drunks hanging about frightening the locals and frightening visitors, giving the wrong impression of the town".
"We want it to be a welcoming town and this is one way we can resolve the problem."
The "curfew exclusion zone" has been designated as the area around St Cybi's church and Market Square, close to Holyhead town centre.
Officers will be able to disperse groups of two or more people who gather in part of Holyhead between 2100 BST and 0600 BST.
Children will also be taken home if they are found without adult supervision
Stand
North Wales Police Deputy Chief Constable, Clive Wolfendale, said :"Everything tells us, public meetings and surveys, that the vast majority are fed up of public spaces being denied to them by yobs.
"Now is the time to take a stand."
The force will use new powers available to police to target anti-social behaviour and which have already been used by several forces across the UK.
Last week in Presteigne, mid Wales, a town council considered imposing a similar curfew under an ancient by-law.
A decision was delayed for further examination of the law.
