Kylie Minogue and Jonathan Ross

An Assembly Member is calling on Kylie Minogue to front a campaign to keep rural post offices open after she spoke about her family's business in Maesteg before the Minogues emigrated to Australia.

The pop icon said that she would have liked to have run her family's post office in the town if her family had not moved.

Blaenau Gwent AM Peter Law is fighting against the closure of seven post offices - and said Kylie would be a "great example" to encourage people to use their facilities.

Her grandparents moved away from the valleys town in 1955, taking Kylie's mother, Carol, with them.

Kylie, 35, said: "I was born in Melbourne but my roots are in Maesteg.

"I think I would probably have been a very good postmistress."
You're Welsh, you're Australian, what a woman!

Speaking to TV personality Jonathan Ross on Radio 2 she said she would never forget her Welsh roots.

"My mother's from Wales, she's a Jones and I'm very proud."

Ross was not convinced.

"You're making it up, you're trying to impress us," he said. "You really have Welsh relatives?"

But Kylie explained that although the name Minogue was Irish she definitely had Welsh connections.

"So were your family deported to Australia?" said Ross. "Only joking!

"You're Welsh, you're Australian, what a woman!" he added.

Mr Law said that due to her background she would be an ideal figure to front his campaign.

He said: "We would be delighted if she came to Blaenau Gwent as part of the campaign to keep our post offices open.

"She would be a great example to encourage people to use their facilities.

"We've got a big problem in Blaenau Gwent in that seven post offices, some of which have been there for many decades, are due to close.

"Kylie Minogue is ideal to take part in a campaign use of post offices as she is one of the biggest megastars in the world and is universally popular."
