Kylie Minogue charts veteran territory with her ninth studio album |
Seven number ones and 15 years at the top of pop's tree, Kylie Minogue has earned her stripes as a musical icon. The Australian diva's new album Body Language - her ninth to date - seems to show there's plenty of life in her yet.
New single and album opener Slow zoomed straight to the top of the charts, its minimalism gradually catching many imaginations.
This hints at a new collection that is less immediate than the big disco hits of Kylie's last effort, Fever.
The diminuitive favourite has not skimped on a sensual feel to this new opus, with Red Blooded Woman and Obsession proving some of the steamier song titles.
The sheer starkness of hit Slow is the lead in to a fuller-blooded set of songs.
But what immediately hits you in the ears is that disco Kylie has embraced urban grooves.
Old school flavas
Still Standing and Secret are spiky chunks of electronica, with more than a hint of the 1980s funk age about them.
Reach Promises, and you will step back in time to those delicious old school flavas.
Those classic R&B leanings carry on deep into the album, with Obsession a stinging track the late Aaliyah would have been suitably proud of.
Red Blooded Woman with its rangy beats and tinkling zither is Kylie's best moment in this latest incarnation.
Fans of her glitterball era will need convincing about Body Language, as the songs aren't instant grabbers.
But artists of longevity have a habit of reinventing themselves to ensure they don't wither on the vine. It seems Kylie is still a successful pop chameleon.
Body Language by Kylie Minogue is out now on Parlophone.
Has Kylie successfully reinvented herself with her latest album? BBC News Online users shared their views.
To Michael Osborne - "spiky chunks of electronica", "tinkling zither"? Get real and stop talking music industry cobblers...

With the launch of her new pop album Body Language Kylie has cemented her position of the princess of pop and she's still as sexy as ever!

Kylie rules ! She is sexy but with class and her music is popular throughout the age groups. I have been a fan since I was in primary school and I'm 22 now. I will continue to be for a long while yet !

Kylie's effort is poor. Save your money and buy Michael Jackson's new greatest hits album, Number Ones. EVERY song is a smash!

Has Kylie successfully reinvented herself with her latest album? My view is an emphatic YES. Kylie may be gradually loosing her youthful looks but her core fanbase is also getting older. Like me, I hope they move with her and continue to give Kylie the support she deserves.

A very sensual sound and very much a chill out CD. This girl can do know wrong with every track oozing a good feel factor to it. Body Language does see Kylie turning away from the up beat pop of Light Years and Fever, but as a long term fan I can only commend the transition to a great R&B laden album with some stand out tracks such as Red Blooded Women, Loving Days, Obseesion and Chocolate. Well done Kylie 11 out of 10.

Prince reinvented himself as "Vincent" then as "squiggle" then as "The Artist". Kylie has re-invented herself as.... er... Kylie which is exactly what we still want her to be.

Sorry but unlike Britney, Christina and Madonna (whom she always beems to be two paces behind), Kylie has no obvious talent. Her marketing always seem to be based on the 'phwoor' factor for the lads, and the 'oh look at the cute guys in the video' element for her largely gay audience. She's not a singer or songwriter of any note; she's simply a marketing muppet with a nice butt.

I love Kylie. Not really fussed about her music though.
Paul Edmonds, UK
Kylie is so cool, she has successfully combined sexuality and class with great music, without jumping on publicity bandwagons something the so called icon Madonna has yet to do!!
Elaine , Scotland
Nonsense music for kids and fools!
Chris, UK
I mean really! It just goes to show how bad the music scene is at the moment when all there is to talk about is a new Kylie album.

Bring back those hot pants! I like Kylie for not being all those things Posh Spice aspires to. She should stick to what she does best, centre of the road disco anthems for the masses.

Reinvent herself? With all the help of stylists, hair/beauty experts, PR people, songwriters, producers, backing singers and a spot of technilogical wizardry thrown in for good measure anyone could reinvent themself! Nothing new or original here. It seems to be a mix of Britney/Madge/Christina and Pet Shop Boys, popped in a blender and the sticky sweet outcome is 'Body Language'. Best not get rid of the gold hotpants yet!

Everybody goes on about Kylie's supposed 15 years at the top, but you might struggle to remember any hits between 1996-2000 when she was very much a straight to bargain bin artist. Does anyone else remember the extremely ill advised single written with the Manic Street Preachers, 'Some Kind of Bliss', or the 'Impossible Princess' album that was up there with Russell Crowe's long player in terms of sales. Thought not.
That particular commercial downturn coincided with an attempt to distance herself from her pop roots and be seen as a 'serious artist', and the records only started selling again when she went pop again with the 'Light Years' album. Your review seems to suggest that Ms Minogue, not satisfied with being popular, wants to be 'cool' as well. 'Delicious old school flavas'indeed - will these people never learn? There's nothing wrong with being a pop princess, particularly when you are an icon to boot.
I'm spinning around, move out of my way....

Having seen Kylie showcase a selection of songs from "Body Language" live on Saturday night in London, I can safely assuage any fears that they don't fit into a live set - she was electric! Kylie has achieved something different without managing to alienate her fans. Madonna, take note!

A much overrated pop-tart who sans the obvious virtues of her much flaunted backside would have been consigned to the also-rans long ago.
Kevin, UK
Yawn! Anyone think record sales will flourish if she (as she claims) starts "covering up". I think not. The likes of Beyonce, Delta Goodrum, Holly Valance etc are far more talented, and better singers than she is... Let's see more of them - and less of the Aussie Oldie!!!!

I think that she's realised she's getting older and everything has started the long journey south. She has younger, faster competition now with the likes of Brittany and Christina. I notice also that she had a dig about how there was too much sex in the pop world recently too. Is she trying to change the industry to suit her own needs?
Alexander, UK
If duelling was legal, I would throw down the gaunlet to Alexander. How dare he say such things about our beloved Kylie. Everything heading south, phooey.
Bruce of the Jungle, D.R. Congo.
Yes, Kylie has done a great job from our many years. She has to keep her popularity going in the top 10. We wish best of luck for her coming album.

Kylie continues to be the best of the better female singers around. Her songs are always listenable to all ages & Body Language is no exception, despite something different being tried.
Terry , England
Kylie Minogue is a woman in her prime!!! On her way out? Never!!! She is very cool and very talented.
Michelle Allcock, UK
I think she has proved to all her bashers that unlike many of those who have come and gone and long been forgotten, she has staying power. She has made huge mistakes but yet she remains one of the most enduring likeable people in pop. Long may she reign the top of the charts!
Paul, UK
With the new single Slow, Kylie has proved that she doesnt have to take off her clothes to sell records like the so called divas of this age!
Hashim, Tanzania
I'm not convinced by what I've heard. I love lots of Kylie's music, from Can't Get You Out Of My Head through to her goth duet with Nick Cave in 1995. However none of these songs grab me. One concern I have is that Kylie is great live, yet this album doesn't lend itself to an energetic, dramatic show. I hope her next album is back up-tempo.
Flash Wilson, UK
It's a bit less re-invention and more having her finger on the pulse, Keeping upto date keeps you fresh. Slow for example is exactly at the heart of dance music at the moment with the electronica vibe to it. It's a fantastic album and I would say her best yet. Kylie fans may find it a bit of getting used to, but it does show how good she can be.
