Students march at night through Singleton Park over safety concerns |
University students in Swansea have marched to highlight concerns over their safety as they walk to lectures through a city park. Many students walk through the city's Singleton Park to get from their homes to the university and they claim the lack of lighting or CCTV coverage leaves them feeling afraid and vulnerable to attack.
The march, which took place on Friday night, was organised by the University of Wales, Swansea Students' Union women's group.
They claim that Singleton Park has been the scene of incidents including indecent exposure, harassment and assault.
The students hope that the march, which involved around 60 students, will result in a co-ordinated effort by the university and the city council to improve lighting and security in the park.
Natalie Davies, the Students' Union Women's Officer, said: "Over the last two years, I have spoken to many students who feel threatened when they walk through the park at night.
"This is an issue that affects a huge number of students, male and female, who feel that they have the right to decent lighting and a safe journey home after their lectures."
In a statement on Saturday, Swansea Council said: "We do work with the university to ensure student safety, but we haven't received any approaches from the Students' Union over safety and we are not aware of any incidents."
Similar marches have taken place in London, Oxford, Worcester and Birmingham in the last week.
