A student has suffered serious spinal injuries after falling from a new climbing wall at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. She is said to be in a comfortable condition at the Robert Jones and Agnes hunt Orthopaedic Hospital at Oswestry.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said it had decided not to investigate because the incident was not work-related.
A university spokesman confirmed that the student - whose name has not been released - suffered a sports accident at the sports hall on 3 February.
He said staff responded immediately and called the emergency services.
"The university wishes the student a full and speedy recovery," he added.
She fell from a 4m wall which cost 75,000 and is primarily designed to be climbed without using ropes.
It was set up at the instigation of the university's mountaineering club, whose members had previously had to travel two hours by car to practise.
An HSE spokesman said: "The girl lost her grip and fell off the wall onto the matting underneath. I understand she didn't fall very far but had an unfortunate landing.
"We have liaised with the university and it has been established there is no problem with the matting."
Guild of Students president Meilyr Emrys said he had no comment to make apart from that he hoped the university would ensure the safety of the wall.
No one from the university's mountaineering club was available for comment.
