Eassie Primary only has 14 pupils and one teacher |
Three Angus communities have united at a public meeting to oppose the closure of a local school. The council is consulting on shutting Eassie Primary and sending youngsters to Newtyle instead. The authority believes the building is in a bad state, pupil numbers are falling and PE facilities are lacking. Campaigners said about 90 people from Eassie, Newtyle and Glamis turned up for the meeting, which was also attended by council representatives. Eassie Primary currently has 14 pupils and one teacher. Eassie parent, Bruce Pattullo, said: "Although recent projections have shown falling school rolls, our own research has shown that school rolls are increasing. "That was one of the main reasons for Glamis and Newtyle to be present as well. They are already feeling that their schools are under pressure and the addition of the pupils from our school would just put the situation into overload. "Even without the increase in projected housing, which they have in their communities, they feel their own schools will be over-full within a year or two." Fellow parent, Gavin Durston, added: "If councillors are listening to us and know the full facts I can't see how they can possibly shut the school. "We want this to be about education, not about buildings and estate management." Angus Council's education convener, Peter Nield, said: "The meeting in Eassie School was very well attended, and I'm grateful to parents and other members of the local communities for coming along to share their views with us. "We heard a lot of very useful and constructive comments, and we'll be reflecting carefully on these over the next few weeks."
