A public meeting will be held at the school on Wednesday evening |
Council representatives have been warned they face some tough questions at a public meeting discussing the potential closure of an Angus school. Eassie Primary could be shut and pupils sent to Newtyle instead. The school had been earmarked for the axe three years ago but was saved following a local campaign. Angus Council has launched a consultation on closure claiming the building is run-down and pupil numbers are falling. Eassie only has one teacher and 14 school children. The authority is also concerned about a lack of PE facilities. However, local parents claim the council have got their facts wrong. | We're resilient that we're going to get all the hard and fast facts as to why the school should stay open and get that in front of the councillors |
Gavin Durston, who has two daughters at the school, said: "What everyone's wanting is some reasons for closing it, because at the moment we're not seeing any reasons at all - the rural population's rising, the number of school age rural kids is rising as well. "So if they give us hard and fast facts then it's going to be a nice and calm and relaxed meeting: if they can't give us any facts then it makes us wonder why they're actually coming to close the school. "We're resilient that we're going to get all the hard and fast facts as to why the school should stay open and get that in front of the councillors." Mr Durston said the last time the school was threatened with closure about 100 people turned out for the public meeting and he is expecting the same this time. He added that they were getting support from all over the UK. The meeting with representatives of the education department will take place at 1900 BST on Wednesday.
