School closure threat once again

Eassie Primary
The council claims the Eassie Primary building is in poor condition

The closure of an Angus primary is back on the agenda, only a few years after the community succeeded in keeping it open.

Next week councillors will be asked to agree to launch a consultation on merging Eassie Primary with Newtyle.

A similar proposal was considered in 2005, but dropped because of local opposition.

Eassie has one teachers and 14 pupils. The council claims the building is run down and PE provision is lacking.

'Significant Issues'

The local authority also claims the school roll is falling.

Education convener Peter Nield said: "Over the past three years there have been some significant issues with the educational facilities in Eassie, including the loss of the village hall for PE lessons.

"Given these circumstances it is the duty of the council to once again consider the future of Eassie Primary School.

"If the committee agrees to authorise a formal consultation on the proposal for a merger with Newtyle, parents and other members of the community will once again have every the opportunity to make their views known and taken into account in any final decision."
