City's undercover firework sting
Fireworks display - generic
The project in Dundee was hailed a major success
An undercover operation in Dundee discovered none of the city's shopkeepers willing to sell fireworks to under-age shoppers.

More than a third of the city's licensed firework sellers were visited by Dundee City Council undercover trading standards officers.

Retailers have been warned to ask anyone they suspect is under the age of 18 for proof of age.

The operation was hailed a success by the council and police.

George Regan, convener of the council's housing, Dundee contracts and environmental services committee, said: "I'm very pleased that so far local businesses in Dundee are taking their responsibilities seriously.

"Fireworks can be fun, but they can also be dangerous in the wrong hands and cause great misery and public nuisance.

"These findings are good news but I am determined that we will come down hard on anyone found to be flouting the law by selling fireworks to under 18s."

Trading standards manager Ken Daly said that it was good to see that the work to restrict the supply of fireworks to young people was paying off.
