A total of 11 Scottish offices would move under the plans

Proposals were unveiled last week to switch 11 sites across Scotland to WH Smith stores.

Lib Dem MP Michael Moore has arranged to meet Post Office managing director Alan Cook next week.

Mr Moore said his constituents had concerns about the plans and that he was seeking "urgent reassurances" on behalf of the staff involved.

The Post Office has announced plans to move 11 main branches across the country into WH Smith's stores.

Sites in Aberdeen, Ayr, Dalkeith, Fort William, Glasgow, Glenrothes, Greenock, Kirkintilloch, St Andrews and Stirling have been selected along with Galashiels.

The Post Office said the move would guarantee a service was retained in areas which might otherwise risk losing their branch altogether.

Consultation on the plans is set to start by July, with the proposed moves completed by autumn 2008.

'Urgent reassurances'

Mr Moore said: "People are worried that this is a done deal and that the consultation will be a sham.

"Right now the deal for employees does not look good and it is essential that Mr Cook provides urgent reassurances to them.

"We have also seen plans like this in the past with other retailers which have then failed to live up to the promises made.

"The jury is very definitely still out on this proposal."

A total of 76 branches across the UK would switch under the plans.
