Borders post office survey starts

Post offices across the Borders are to be surveyed
A survey of post offices across the Borders has been launched in light of plans to close 2,500 UK branches.

It is part of a campaign by local Liberal Democrat politicians to stop offices being shut in the region.

The Department of Trade and Industry has opened consultation on its plans to make the post office network more viable. The process runs until 8 March.

Local MPs and MSPs said they would use the information gathered in their survey to respond to the DTI.

'Wider public'

The study, by MP Michael Moore and MSPs Euan Robson and Jeremy Purvis, started with offices in Stow, Denholm and Eyemouth.

SNP MSP Christine Grahame is also sounding out public opinion and hopes to canvas up to 40,000 Borderers for their views.

She said her consultation was aimed at finding out what the "wider public" thought of the plans.

"The emphasis is on getting the view of ordinary people in the Borders and then directing those views en masse to the Post Office," she said.
