Busy day beckons for Gretna Green

Valentine's Day is the busiest of the year at Gretna
A total of 44 couples are making the trip to Gretna Green to tie the knot in Valentine's Day ceremonies.

They are part of about 5,000 weddings which take place at the south west Scotland venue every year.

Chief Registrar Jane Chandler said Gretna remained a popular marriage site with 14 February traditionally its busiest day of the year.

More than 50,000 couples have married in Gretna Green and the surrounding area since 1995.

Ms Chandler said the village showed no signs of losing its popularity as a wedding destination.

'Very busy'

"People have been coming to Gretna Green for many, many years," she said.

"We have 44 ceremonies - 43 marriage ceremonies and one civil partnership.

"It is always very busy on Valentine's."

She added that changes to allow ceremonies to take place outside of registry offices had not affected the area at all.

"It definitely has not dampened Gretna Green by any means," she said.
