About 60 couples were married in Gretna during the day |
Dozens of weddings have taken place at marriage mecca Gretna Green on St Valentine's Day. They were part of the annual figures which see more than 5,000 couples tie the knot in the village.
Of the 60 weddings, 19 were at the Gretna Hall Hotel where manager Val Phillips was retiring after organising marriages for 30 years.
Gretna Football Club also offered red roses to the first 200 women attending their Scottish Cup replay.
Big changes
According to Mrs Phillips, there have been big changes in Gretna over her 30 years organising the special occasions.
"Thirty years ago the main visitors here were all tourists and a wedding was - I don't want to use the word a nuisance - but it got in the way of your tourist trade," she said.
"Then it evolved with the dropping in 1977 of the residential qualifications so from going from a few hundred a year we are now at 5,500 every year."
Since 1995 about 48,835 couples have married in Gretna and Gretna Green.
