Gretna is world renowned for weddings |
Nearly 100 couples have tied the knot in Gretna - with some travelling from as far as the US to marry on St Valentine's Day. Some 97 couples chose the most romantic day of the year to get married in the Scottish town - the favoured destination for elopers.
A third married in Gretna's registry office, 27 couples wed at other venues and a further 44 in churches.
It was 14 more weddings than on St Valentine's Day last year.
The dozens of weddings meant an even busier time for registration staff, who have been helping couples prepare for their big day in 2004 since February last year.
A spokeswoman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: "Couples come from all over the world, ranging from Ayrshire to the US."
Sheila Wallace, senior registrar at Gretna, said: "It certainly has been a busy day. We have had 97 marriages and from what I hear, everything has gone to plan and has been a most enjoyable day."
