Flood problems follow heavy rains
Whitesands flooded
The river Nith covered car parks on the Whitesands
Clean-up operations have started in Dumfries and Galloway after heavy rain hit the region overnight.

The Whitesands in Dumfries were flooded after the River Nith overflowed, covering the road and affecting a number of properties.

Elsewhere, the A762 west of Castle Douglas was blocked by flooding a mile north of Mossdale.

The A714 Newton Stewart to Barrhill road was closed near Challoch, with rainwater affecting many other roads.

There were also reports of flooding affecting routes in and out of New Galloway.

Operations to close the Whitesands to traffic started in the early hours of Friday morning.

By 1000 GMT the car parks in the area were flooded and the waters had reached a number of businesses in the area.

Restrictions on traffic access were expected to remain in force for some time before the flood waters subsided.

Drivers have been advised to allow for extra time for any journey in the affected areas.
