Flooding concerns surface again
River Nith
The River Nith in Dumfries regularly floods onto the Whitesands
Flood prevention plans are vital to the regeneration of Dumfries, councillors have been told.

Long-standing problems exist in the Whitestands area of the town when the River Nith overflows its banks.

Lochside councillor Ronnie Nicholson has called for a report on the possible solutions to the problem and the costs associated with any such measures.

He added that funding was available for flood prevention and the town should look to tap into those resources.

"The retailers in the town centre share my view that it does need to move forward," said Mr Nicholson.

"The thing that has changed from the past is that we have a regeneration project that needs to move forward and needs to move forward quickly.

"We need to look at this flooding prevention as a matter of urgency and go forward with that," he added.

A blueprint for the future development of Dumfries town centre was unveiled last month.

It outlined ways in which the number of people living in the town centre and the number of businesses operating there could be increased.
