Gretna intend to approach Motherwell for talks in January

Chief executive Graeme Muir said Fir Park was the best option if the club won promotion to the SPL next season.

Planning permission is in place to develop Raydale Park to a 6,000-seater stadium, but building work will not be complete in time to meet deadlines.

Gretna currently sit top of Scottish Division One despite a weekend defeat by bottom-of-the-table Airdrie United.

If Gretna achieve promotion, a ground share would be needed for a minimum of six months and a contract deal must be with the Scottish Premier League by March.

Mr Muir said the club would wait a few weeks to see how their promotion challenge developed.

"In January, both clubs might have a better idea of where they stand," he said.

"If it was to happen that Motherwell were bottom of the league, I don't think they would be that keen on ground sharing with us if we were to take their place.

"It is probably the preferred option for our supporters regarding travelling distance."

Other grounds

Mr Muir added, however, that they had not ruled out the possibility of seeking a sharing agreement elsewhere.

"There are other clubs we might have that option with, but we haven't entered into any dialogue or contacted them regarding this," he said.

Gretna played at Motherwell's ground earlier this season against Derry City in the Uefa Cup.
