Campaign aims to cut road deaths

The powerful road safety campaign has been launched
A powerful campaign aimed at reducing the number of road deaths in Dumfries and Galloway has been launched.

Entitled "The Mourning After" the region's safety camera partnership hopes it will highlight the dangers of driving during the winter months.

It comes in response to the 17 deaths on the region's roads in 2005.

A high-profile advertising campaign will be backed by the use of safety cameras across Dumfries and Galloway to stop motorists speeding.

The campaign will also be extended into parts of Cumbria and the Borders in order to get the message across.

Devastating effects

Safety Camera Partnership project manager Sgt Eric Dunion said they wanted to make people aware of the dangers of speeding.

The campaign will highlight the devastating effects serious accidents have on families as well as the drivers themselves.

"The Safety Camera Partnership is committed to reducing the number of collisions and resulting injuries and fatalities on the roads of Dumfries and Galloway through education, encouragement and enforcement," he said.

He urged all drivers to think seriously about their behaviour particularly at a time when the weather and light conditions could be poor.
