Police say the rise in road deaths is worrying but against the local trend |
The number of people killed on Dumfries and Galloway roads in the past year has risen by more than 25%. Fourteen people died in the 12 months up to the end of March compared to 11 for the same period last year.
Serious injuries were also up - from 96 to 110 - but slight injuries saw a decrease of more than 10%.
Police said that the figures were worrying but they were against the local trend, which has performed well against nationally set targets.
A report to the region's police and fire committee said that a number of incidents in recent weeks had contributed to the rise.
"This is obviously a very distressing time for families involved in such collisions as well as the officers who have to deal with such incidents," it said.
The report added that the region had already performed well in attempting to reach national reduction targets for the number of road deaths and serious injuries.
"However, we will not be complacent or relax in our efforts to maintain safer roads in this area as one death is one death too many," it concluded.
