The need for improvements to the A77 has been highlighted
There have been urgent calls to upgrade the main routes to the ferry ports at Stranraer and Cairnryan.

The need for improvements to the A75 and A77 roads was highlighted during talks between the Scottish Executive and the North Channel Partnership.

The meeting with Transport Minister Tavish Scott at Cairnryan focussed on the importance of ferry operations to the region and Scotland as a whole.

Ambitious waterfront plans for Stranraer were also discussed.

Its members stressed the need for urgent implementation of six improvement schemes planned for the A75 - as well as five for the A77 north of Cairnryan.

Partnership chairman Robert Higgins said they had been able to highlight many concerns in Dumfries and Galloway.

"We were able to focus on regeneration, employment and social inclusion issues with the minister," he said.

"We highlighted the need for urgent investment by the Scottish Executive on the key national and international transport corridors which pass through the region."

The transport minister has previously pledged to act quickly to address local concerns about the roads network in the region.

Other areas discussed at the Cairnryan talks were the regeneration of Dumfries town centre and projects planned for communities served by the A75 at Gretna, Lockerbie and Annan.
