Public backing for road upgrade
A76 road sign
A petition has been delivered demanding route upgrade work
Residents have backed the campaign for road improvements on the A76 through Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire.

A petition containing almost 2,500 names has been handed in to the Scottish Executive.

MSPs Alex Fergusson and Dr Elaine Murray have pushed the case for work on the road, where three people died in the space of five weeks last year.

Transport Minister Tavish Scott has agreed to visit the area this month, possibly travelling via the A76.

Tory MSP Mr Fergusson and Labour counterpart Dr Murray said the petition showed the strength of local feeling about the need for improvements.

"The petition received almost 2,500 signatures - nearly all of them from communities on the A76 and I think that is the significant point that needs to be made," he said.

"The Scottish Executive needs to look very seriously at the accident record to see what measures can be taken to improve driver safety which is, at the end of the day, the cause of accidents."

The transport minister had already given a commitment to visit Dumfries and Galloway at the end of this month for meetings with road safety campaigners.
