Pennan featured in the 1983 film Local Hero |
The hotel which found worldwide fame after featuring in the film Local Hero has been sold. The Pennan Inn in Aberdeenshire - and the village's red phone box - became recognised after Bill Forsyth's 1983 film starring Burt Lancaster. Selling agents said it was understood that the buyers hoped to reopen and upgrade the hotel as soon as possible. In 2005, Local Hero topped a film critics' poll for the best use of locations in Britain. The 1983 film saw representatives of a US petro-chemical giant, who were seeking to build a refinery in a coastal village, come to find the gentler rhythms of the local life practically irresistible. The identity of the pub's new owner remains a mystery, although selling agents Matthew Cohen and Associates said they hoped to reveal the details in the coming days.
