The weather was good news for young sledgers, as well as ski centres
Almost 100 schools were closed or partially closed as bitterly cold weather continued to cause problems in north east Scotland. More than 80 were closed in Aberdeenshire on Monday, and a handful in Moray, Shetland and Aberdeen, where temperatures fell to -12C overnight. Warnings of widespread ice on untreated roads and pavements have been issued. Part of the A96 Huntly to Inverurie road was closed due to a fallen electricity pole. Grampian Police urged drivers to take extra care as the winter weather from last week and the weekend continued. Meanwhile, a ship at Aberdeen harbour was offloading 6,000 tonnes of road salt brought in from Spain. An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said the local authority's salt levels were low as a result of recent demand, but that the latest delivery had been scheduled. The freezing conditions had provided a boost for Scotland's ski centres on Saturday and Sunday.
