Council cuts could face challenge

Choices offered respite care for 56 people in Aberdeen

An equality watchdog is discussing whether to use its legal powers to challenge some of Aberdeen City Council's budget cuts.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission will consider whether the cuts have been "equality impact assessed" as required by law.

The council cutbacks caused controversy in May when the authority closed the Choices disabled day centre.

The Commission's Scotland committee will discuss the cuts on 30 October.

Delight at news

A decision is then expected to be made by its legal committee in November.

Choices in Westburn Road offered respite care for 56 people and closed as part of the council's programme of budget savings.

Choices campaigner Kevin McCahery said he was delighted at the latest news.

An Aberdeen City Council spokesman said it would be inappropriate to comment.
