Plan to take over city ice rink

Two ice skating groups and an ice hockey club have joined forces to explore ways of taking over the running of Aberdeen's only rink.

Aberdeen City Council last week announced the Linx Ice Arena at the Beach Leisure Centre was to close for up to 18 months for essential repairs.

About 150 people representing clubs which use the arena met on Wednesday night and agreed to look at options.

It is hoped a trust could take over the running of the ice rink.

Funding issue

A senior member of the ruling Lib Dem and SNP group on the council told BBC Scotland they would be in favour of considering the establishment of a trust to take over the running of the ice rink.

However Councillor Neil Fletcher said he would not want to give the group any sort of false hope as more than 650,000 would need to be found to tackle essential repairs and upgrading work.

Parents and coaches believe they can address the funding issue.

Some of the young children who use the facility hope to pursue a career in skating.
