The championships will be held in two Aberdeen venues

The event will be held in the new Curl Aberdeen facility and the Linx Ice Arena.

The European Curling Federation (ECF) announced that the city had been chosen to host the championships.

Aberdeen City Council said: "This is brilliant news for Aberdeen. The championships will help to showcase our sporting facilities."

Economy boost

The competition will be the last major international curling event before the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010.

Councillor John Stewart, of Aberdeen City Council's sports strategy working group, said: "With more than 30 nations from across Europe all taking part in this fantastic event we are looking forward to welcoming all the teams to the city.

"And it will provide a tremendous boost to the local economy."

Malcolm Richardson, president of the ECF, said: "The European Curling Federation are delighted to have been able to accept the bid from Aberdeen to host the 2009 European Curling Championship."

Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said: "Securing the 2009 European Curling Championships is a major coup for Aberdeen.

"The city was able to offer world-class facilities and as a result this event will raise the profile of curling in Scotland."
