Oil trust to safeguard fishermen
Cod
The new trust aims to make catching fish safer
A new trust has been set up by the oil, gas and fishing industries to help keep fishermen safe in UK waters.

The Fisheries Legacy Trust Company (FLTC) will gather up-to-date information on all offshore industry-related seabed hazards.

These include parts of oil platforms left on the seabed following decommissioning. Fishing nets can become snagged on such obstructions.

The database will be available to all fishing vessels.

The FLTC was formed after talks between Oil and Gas UK, the Scottish Fishermen's Federation (SFF) and the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations (NFFO).

It is hoped that oil companies will invest between 40m and 50m into the fund over the next 30 to 40 years as decommissioning picks up pace.

It has been welcomed by leaders from both industries.

The new company was unveiled at the Offshore Europe conference in Aberdeen.
