Ramsay will play the opening rounds with the champion |
The first British golfer since 1911 to secure the US Amateur Championship has said the thought of playing with Phil Mickelson is "quite a scary thing". Richie Ramsay, 23, from Aberdeen, earned the right to play with the defending champion at the Masters next month thanks to his win.
Ramsay said: "If I wasn't nervous there would be something wrong with me."
He will play in the first three golf majors of 2007 while studying at Stirling University.
'Bottle' needed
He also won places in the US Open and Open with his victory last August.
In keeping with Augusta tradition, Ramsay will partner last year's winner Mickelson in the first two rounds.
The last British amateur to survive the halfway cut at the Masters was Peter McEvoy in 1978.
McEvoy said he believed Ramsay has the talent and, just as importantly, the "bottle" to emulate him.
Ramsay has already won bursary funding from the Royal and Ancient Foundation after his impressive amateur triumph.
Other names on the Havemeyer Cup, which is presented to the US Amateur champion, include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
