Ramsay tees up golf Masters plan
Richie Ramsay
Ramsay will play the first two rounds with Phil Mickelson
The first British golfer since 1911 to secure the US Amateur Championship is heading to America to practise for the Masters at Augusta.

Ten weeks before he tees off alongside defending champion Phil Mickelson, Richie Ramsay has decided to get to know the famous Georgia course.

Ramsay, from Aberdeen, will play in the first three golf majors of 2007 while studying at Stirling University.

He also won places in the US Open and Open with his victory last August.

Ramsay said ahead of Thursday's departure: "I've already spoken to a number of people about what to expect at the Masters.

"I'm going over with my coach Ian Rae now to take a look at the course for myself."

Famous names

Before returning home, he will also compete at next week's prestigious Jones Cup tournament at Sea Island, Georgia.

In keeping with Augusta tradition, he will partner last year's winner Mickelson in the first two rounds in April.

The last British amateur to survive the halfway cut at the Masters was Peter McEvoy in 1978.

Ramsay has already won bursary funding from the Royal and Ancient Foundation after his impressive amateur triumph.

Other names on the Havemeyer Cup, which is presented to the US Amateur champion, include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
