Traffic queue in Aberdeen snow

A night of heavy snow and ice has closed schools and roads throughout the Grampian region.

Eleven schools in Aberdeenshire were closed or partially closed on Tuesday and several roads were affected.

The B974 was closed from Cairn O'Mount to Fettercairn and the A939 was closed at the Lecht. The B976 from Crathie to Gairnshiel was only suitable for 4x4s.

Grampian Police reminded drivers to allow extra time for journeys and to watch for black ice.

Schools closed included Craigievar School, Monymusk School and Kincardine O'Neil School in Aboyne.

Cut free

Commuters in Aberdeen faced long drives to work in rush hour due to heavy traffic in the snow.

A 32-year-old woman was cut free from her car after a crash on the A97 just north of Aberchirder.

Firefighters removed the roof and she was taken by ambulance to Chalmers Hospital in Banff.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said she was believed to have non life-threatening injuries.

A man and a woman were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

The snow is not expected to be as widespread on Wednesday.
