Fishermen say they want to throw less dead cod back |
Scottish fishermen say they want to be allowed to legally catch more cod next year - to avoid having to throw so many back into the sea. The Scottish Fishermen's Federation (SFF) has begun its planning for this winter's vital European quota talks.
The organisation says stocks of the fish are beginning to recover.
Many cod have to be discarded back into the sea dead, as trawler crews do not have the right to land everything they catch.
'Discard less'
SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong argues it makes sense to now raise the quota level.
He told BBC Scotland: "As cod recovers the quota available is forcing discards and that causes a great deal of heartache.
"A great deal of effort is going towards selectivity.
"We are asking for an uplift in quota, not so we can catch more but so we can discard less."
