 Organisers say Polish and Scottish blood can both save lives |
Polish people are being urged to give blood in their new home of Aberdeen - as a way of showing their thanks for Scotland's warm welcome. There is regularly a need for more blood donors in Scotland.
With a growing Polish population in the Aberdeen area, the session has been arranged for the blood donor centre in Foresterhill on Wednesday evening.
Organiser Pawel Glowacki said: "It does not matter if it's Scottish or Polish blood because it saves lives."
'Thousands required'
It is estimated that about 80,000 people from Poland live in Scotland and there are more than 440,000 registered blood donors in Poland.
Mr Glowacki told BBC Scotland of the special session: "We should do this - there's huge demand for blood in Scotland.
"Thousands of donors are required to save the lives of babies and accident victims and people waiting for operations."
The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) hopes the Polish initiative will help supplies.
The SNBTS said 1,000 blood donations were required every day in Scotland to meet patient needs.
