Weather disrupts travel in north

Snow and ice has disrupted road, rail and air travel in the Highlands and Islands.

Inverness Airport runway was open as normal, but flights from English airports were delayed or cancelled.

The A9 was also open following closures along the route on Tuesday. Stretches of 12 other roads were closed by snow, but four later reopened.

The railway line between Inverness and Aviemore remains closed after a freight train derailed on Monday.

Heavy snow has been forecast for Thursday.

Emergency services have urged people to check that neighbours, especially older people, have been coping.

Insp Steve Mardon, of Northern Constabulary, said: "The severe weather conditions are expected to continue for several more days, with no sign of any thaw."

The British Red Cross said it was on stand-by to assist pregnant women on Skye as they reached their due dates and needed to be taken to hospital.
