Year of culture ready for launch

Events will celebrate the Highland's arts, heritage and sports
The Highland 2007 Year of Culture is scheduled to begin this weekend.

First Minister Jack McConnell is to attend the launch event and Lifescan Monster Street Party in Inverness from 1900 GMT on Friday.

Performances by Inverness Gaelic Choir, Massed Pipes and Drums of the Highlands, Blazin' Fiddles and a fireworks display are planned.

The launch will mean road closures and a suspension of on-street parking in the city centre from 1900 to 2200 GMT.

Festivities are proposed to continue on Saturday with more parties, street performances, a shinty match and the re-opening of Inverness Museum and Gallery following a �1.3m refurbishment.
