A musical described as a cross between singer Michael Jackson's Thriller and zombie horror spoof Shaun of the Dead has won a Highland competition.

Highland Quest was launched 18 months ago by theatre impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness and the Scottish Executive.

The winning entry was The Sundowe by Edinburgh-based brothers John, James and Gerry Kielty.

It will premiere next year at the redeveloped Eden Court.

The venture attracted more than 140 entries from around the world.

Judging panel

Sir Cameron, the man behind box office hits such as Miss Saigon and Les Misrables, contributed 77,000 to the competition.

The Scottish Executive gave 188,000 in funding.

The winning entry was announced after highlights of each show were performed at the MacPhail Centre in Ullapool in the Highlands on Saturday.

The five musicals were performed before a judging panel and audience.

Eden Court will stage the winning entry next year to coincide with the Highland Year of Culture.

Writers and composers entered from all over the UK, as well as Europe, America, Canada, New Zealand, Taiwan and China.
