A public consultation on plans to close 13 primary schools and 12 nurseries in Glasgow is due to end. Glasgow City Council has been taking submissions since 2 February and is due to make a final decision on 23 April. The authority said the closure plan was drawn up after a "city-wide assessment" and was necessary to save money. The proposals have provoked widespread anger from some parents and community groups who believe they will have a negative impact on pupils' education. Several marches and demonstrations have been held outside the City Chambers by groups worried about the closure plan. One of the final protests was held on Tuesday by parents of pupils from St Gilbert's Primary, in the north of Glasgow. They handed over a detailed document to council officials outlining their argument to retain the school. Under council proposals, St Gilbert's pupils would be moved to St Philomena's Primary, about one mile away in the city's Royston area. The St Gilbert's building would then become the new Barmulloch Primary. In their submission, parents from St Gilbert's argued that pupils would be moved from a "Grade A" building to a "Grade D" structure at St Philomena's. They call for both schools to be merged on the existing St Gilbert's site with "adaptations" made to accommodate the increased numbers.
