Dozens of people protested against the closure plans |
A consultation is to go-ahead on plans by Glasgow City Council which could see the closure of 13 primary schools and 12 nurseries. Dozens of people took part in a protest outside the City Chambers on Thursday as a special meeting of the full council approved the move. A six week consultation, involving parents, staff and unions will go-ahead from Monday. A final decision, taken by the full council, is expected by 23 April. A council spokesman said: "In the past, when the council has closed schools it has built new ones, but in the current global financial climate it cannot afford to build new schools and nurseries, and can no longer use public private partnerships.
"Education officials have now carried out a city-wide assessment of potential mergers based on criteria such as educational benefit, building capacity and occupancy, transport arrangements and the wider community impact. "The statutory consultation period for these proposals is four weeks. However, the council is extending this to six weeks to ensure interested parties have a chance to make their views known. "The consultation period, which will include public meetings at each of the schools and nurseries involved, will begin on Monday, 2 February." Speaking after the meeting, SNP Councillor Patricia Gibson, said: "The administration is not alone in recognising the need for change, but they are alone in their desire to rush headlong into an ill-conceived and wrongheaded solution. "We want to see change on the basis of local need and not through budgetary pressures. "By pushing on with their timetable regardless of public concern Labour is riding roughshod over the concerns of many of those with an interest in primary and nursery education in Glasgow."
