 Glasgow's hotel sector outperformed the rest of the UK |
Scotland's biggest city is outperforming other UK cities in the tourism sector, it has been claimed. Scott Taylor is chief executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau which promotes the city as an international conference centre.
He said it had better rates of hotel occupancy and tourist demand than other places such as Manchester.
The news comes as 1,700 sociologists converge on Glasgow for a major conference on migration and conflict.
'Economic value'
The four day event is expected to inject almost �2m into the local economy.
Mr Taylor said: "Glasgow is now outperforming every other UK city in terms of occupancy growth and year-on-year growth.
"It's outperforming in terms of the overall accommodation sector and tourist demand for Glasgow.
"There are on average about 1,500 delegates in Glasgow every day, 365 days a year. They are a firm part of the overall economy and bring enormous economic value to Glasgow."
Mr Taylor also said some 2,400 hotel rooms were due to be built in the city over the next few years.
