Subway revamp 'could cost 300m'
An underground train
Glasgow's subway is the third oldest in the world
The organisation running Glasgow's subway has said it requires about 300m to modernise the system.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport claimed it is struggling to keep up with maintenance needs.

Now the SPT wants to modernise the subway and is currently drawing up proposals for its future, which will be published in the next few weeks.

With public transport playing a key role in Glasgow's Commonwealth Games bid, SPT said it had a strong case.

The underground was opened in 1896, making it the third oldest in the world.

It was built on a narrower gauge than others so trains and general maintenance are more costly.

A bid will be made for executive funding to allow for improvements to be carried out.
