Nightrider to take on subway run
A First bus and an underground train
First buses will take over when the underground closes
A night bus operating on the same route as Glasgow's underground will be launched in April.

First in Glasgow has been awarded the tender for the service, which is expected to attract about 60,000 passengers each year.

The night bus will link all subway stations after the underground closes at 2340 GMT on a Friday and Saturday, with a flat fare of 2.

The Nightrider initiative will operate as a pilot project for 15 months.

On Sundays, it will operate from 1800 GMT to 2330 GMT.

Six buses will provide clockwise and anti-clockwise journeys every 20 minutes from Friday 27 April onwards.

Councillor Alistair Watson, chair of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, said: "We know there is a demand for better late-night public transport in Glasgow, particularly for people trying to get home after a night-out.

"But the subway nightrider will also benefit early morning shiftworkers."

A report said that at about 300,000 to run, the project was "significantly less expensive" than running the subway on extended hours.

The cost of opening the underground overnight was put at 540,000.
