Councillors have agreed a 4m cash boost for the project |
Glasgow City Council has approved 4m of funding to boost the city's flagship National Indoor Arena project. The money will fund pre-construction and design phases of the stadium, which will form the centre of the city's 2014 Commonwealth Games bid.
The council's executive committee hope to include a national Indoor Sports Arena, a National Velodrome and the SportScotland HQ at the site.
Work is due to start on the project in 2007 with completion expected in 2010.
The sports complex will be sited in the east of Glasgow, near Celtic Park.
Organisers said the money would allow the design team behind the project to move beyond the feasibility stage.
Councillor John Lynch, executive member for cultural and leisure services at Glasgow City Council, said the new facility would provide the opportunity to improve health and well-being for the local community.
Mr Lynch added: "These will be fantastic new facilities for Glasgow and Scotland that will improve our elite sports performance and attract even more world-class sporting events to Glasgow."
Designers hope the facility will also attract an elite training centre as well as providing state of the art sports facility for the community.
Dedicated sports
The National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) will have 5,000 seats in a national multi-sports venue that can act as a dedicated sports venue able to host national and international sports events.
The National Velodrome will have 2,000 seats, and it is anticipated that this will become a world centre for cycling and a 'wheels' facility for the local community, as it will also feature an online skating facility.
Planners say the amount of seats in this arena can be expanded to 4,000 as necessary if Scotland wins the bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
In addition, there will be three smaller sports halls for events and community use.
