Scotland's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has been given a major boost following a visit by a sporting VIP. The Commonwealth Games Federation's president, Mike Fennel, visited the city on Wednesday and praised Glasgow's facilities and welcoming atmosphere.
He said some of the city's sporting and leisure facilities were among the best in the world.
He also praised Glasgow's reputation as a friendly and vibrant city.
Mr Fennell dismissed claims that Glasgow's bid would be harmed by London hosting the Olympic Games in 2012.
He said: "The rowing facilities at Strathclyde Park are very impressive - among the best in the world - and the plans for an athlete's village in the east end are also quite impressive.
"But just as important is the kind of welcome the athletes will receive and Glasgow has a reputation as a friendly city.
He added: "First and foremost, candidate cities are judged on technical qualities. Only after that does sentiment come in."
