An artist's impression of the proposed athletes' village

The east end has been chosen as the site for the athletes' village and 1,000 homes could be built in the area.

First Minister Jack McConnell, speaking in Dalmarnock, said: "We are stating our intention to transform an area that has lived through many challenges."

Work will begin next year on two national arenas in the east end.

The Glasgow bid team said the area was easily linked to the city's transport network, offering ready access to all the major games venues and facilities.

The village will be next to the National Indoor Sports Arena and National Velodrome.

Mr McConnell added: "Dalmarnock is an ideal home for the athletes' village.

"Winning the games for Scotland will transform lives.

"It will bring about enormous change and renewal but it will do so much more.

"I know that we are in a tough race but it is a race I am determined we will win."

Once the games are over, the village would be made available for private sale and social housing.

Councillor Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, added: "The thousands of athletes who will come here for the games and the families who will live in the area after them will further strengthen one of our greatest communities."

Glasgow is bidding against Abuja in Nigeria and Halifax in Canada for the right to host the games. The winner is due to be announced in autumn next year.
