Michael Johnson told primary school pupils of his career

The American five times Olympic gold medallist voiced his support during a visit to Dalmarnock Primary School.

Johnson, 39, was the first man to win the 200m and 400m titles at the same Olympics, in 1996.

During his visit to Glasgow, he said: "For Glasgow to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games would be a great opportunity for all Scottish athletes."

Mr Johnson said it was clear Glasgow had the community's support.

"There is a consensus that Glasgow would be a good city to host the games and it would be good for the city," he said.

"There are a lot of plans and talk of regeneration but it seems the Glasgow plans are feasible to regenerate an area that desperately needs it then that's a very big positive."
